The Family of God
Brothers and Sisters in the Family of God
As we conclude our study of the Book of Romans, Paul is calling on the church to embrace fellow believers, first commending Phoebe to them as his courier and messenger and asking them to extend every hospitality to her during her visit, then asking them to greet several of the people who have assisted him in his ministry journeys. Presumably, they are among the congregation in Rome, so he calls them out to be recognized for their faithfulness. The diversity of the group is remarkable - many of these people in ancient times would have been enemies or prohibited from associating with one another, and there were issues of race, gender, class, ethnicity, political loyalties, and even slavery and citizenship that would have usually kept them apart.
Yet here they are, united and bestowing honor and affection on one another, with Jesus as their unifying force. Their reality and identity are inexorably rooted in the power, authority, and grace of Jesus Christ. He was the central organizing principle of their lives, and we are called today to make Him the same, irrespective of anything or anyone else.
Paul gives the Roman church final instructions, greetings from other saints, and a precious doxology praising our shared Lord and Savior.
I am so excited to wrap up our study of Romans with you. As a bonus, I'll update the church on our finances and plans related to the lease and our current location. Please don't miss this Sunday!
Blessings,
