A Love That Lights the World

Sep 8, 2024    Ron Miller

Last week, we learned what Paul taught the church in Rome about the obligations of committed Christians to the authorities and institutions that rule over us. We discussed the importance of showing honor and respect to them, regardless of their actions, while remaining steadfast in our obedience to the Lord. Should we suffer as a result, we should accept the consequences with joy, not only because it refines our character but also because we can share and identify with Christ’s suffering and, therefore, draw nearer to Him.

As we continue our study of the book of Romans, Paul begins in Romans 13:8 with another obligation, but this time, it’s our obligation to one another, to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 22:39; Mark 12:31). The answer to fulfilling all the Law and prophets is incredibly simple, but bears repeating because as we look around us, it seems incredibly hard to do. Yet there is no more excellent thing we can do than love, and Paul tells us that not only does it fulfill the Law, but it drives out the darkness and brings light to the world. “So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:12).

I can’t wait to walk in the light with you this Sunday!

Blessings,

Ron
