The Divine Servant

On a few Christian college campuses, including Southwest Baptist University, where I'm employed, a sculpture by Max Greiner, Jr., “Divine Servant®,” captures one of the Bible's most compelling demonstrations of Christian love - Jesus washing his disciples' feet. The sculpture focuses on Peter, who was initially embarrassed by Jesus's actions. He thought performing the work of a lowly servant was beneath Jesus, and he didn't want any part of demeaning His Master. However, Jesus said, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me” (John 13:8). What Jesus was saying was if you think this demonstration of love is inappropriate, then you don't get me or what I'm trying to teach you.

As we focus this year on loving our neighbor, we have no better example than Jesus Himself, whose act of servitude in this story was just a glimpse into how far He was willing to go to demonstrate how much He loves us. Let's examine this story and how it helps us love our neighbor!

Blessings,
